In his short excerpt from "Tongue Tied," "Aria," Richard Rodriguez describes the troubles that many families face with attempting to become bilingual speaking families, in order to succeed in school systems. Rodriguez stands by the fact and argues that it is important to speak different languages. In his excerpt, Rodriguez talks about his personal experiences with and without bilingual education, saying "Without question, it would have pleased me to hear my teachers address me in Spanish when I entered the classroom. I would have felt much less afraid. I would have trusted them and responded with ease," (pg. 1). It was just interesting how he uses his own personal connections in order to build his argument for bilingual education, and that it is something actually needs to be implemented.
Question: What are the big reasons for schools not to have a bilingual teaching method.

I really liked your blog post! The picture was very accurate and I agreed with everything that you said. As for your question, I think it is very important to ask. Hopefully we discuss this more in class. I really wish more schools taught bilingually.
ReplyDeleteChristian,
ReplyDeleteI love the picture you chose! I chose to include the same one in my blog as well. I think it really highlights the negative way teachers handle having ELL students in their classroom, and it's really sad. I hope there is some way we can help students in situations such as the one Rodriguez was in. Great job!
Christian, i thought you had a pretty interesting question, and honestly i'm not sure what the right answer is as to why they don't teach bilingually. I believe that schools should be taught bilingually!
ReplyDeleteI loved the picture you used. I really think it depicts what Aria is saying in his passage. But I do wonder why we don't choose to advocate for bilingual teaching in the classroom. I think that's a very good discussion to bring up!
ReplyDeleteBeing bilingual you sometimes deal with backlash and trying to fit in
ReplyDeleteBilingual education is so important because it makes sure ALL students can learn the material. Without it, students will end up just as sad and confused as the student in that comic.
